Your Texas cosmetology license renewal comes every two years and consequently, you can complete the required four hours of continuing education anytime in the two years leading up to your license renewal.  

TDLR recommends starting your renewal process 60 days before your license expires since the renewal process may last several weeks.

If you let your license expire, the way it’s handled will differ depending on how long it has been expired.

For Operators, Specialty Licenses and Specialty Certificates:

You must complete a total of 4 hours of department-approved continuing education courses to renew the following license types:

Texas cosmetology license renewal fee

Cosmetologists in Texas must renew their license every two years from the date the license was issued.

The current renewal fee for specialty cosmetology licenses in the state of Texas is $53.

Texas cosmetology license expired between 18 months and three years

If your license has been expired between 18 months and three years, you will need to submit a “Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal” form, along with double the renewal fee of $53 ($106).

Texas cosmetology license expired between 90 days and 3 years.

If your license has been expired between 90 days and 3 years, you will owe double the regular renewal fee of $53 ($106).

Texas cosmetology license expired more than 3 years

If your license has been expired for more than three years, your license is no longer eligible for renewal and you will need to re-apply for a Texas cosmetology license.

Texas cosmetology license renewal courses

To renew an instructor license, or an esthetician instructor, manicure instructor, esthetician/manicure instructor or eyelash extension instructor specialty license, you must complete a total of four hours of continuing education through department-approved courses in the following manner:

  • One hour in sanitation
  • Three hours in any topic listed in Section 83.120 of the Administrative Rules

Your provider will issue you a course completion certificate within 15 days from the end of your course.

You may not receive continuing education hours for attending the same course more than once. One hour of continuing education is equivalent to 50 minutes of actual instruction time.

You must retain a copy of the certificate of completion for a course for two years after the date of completion.

The Department may request to see your records to determine compliance as part of an inspection or investigation.

Please note that the reporting of continuing education hours is the responsibility of the continuing education provider.

The provider must electronically file a course completion report no later than seven days after the course completion date.
