The Georgia State Board of Barbers defines barbering as the cutting, styling, and designing of hair, including facial hair. If you want to start a career as a barber in Georgia and open your own cutting-edge shop, you must be eligible for a license.

These steps should be followed to become a licensed barber in Georgia:

1. Pass a 1500-hour training course for barbers in Georgia.

Graduating from a Georgia barber college is the first step toward obtaining a barber license in Georgia.

Your school is required to offer at least 1500 hours of specialized training by the Georgia State Board of Barbers. The following courses are board-required: 

Theory (280 hours)

  • 50 hours of theory.
  • 25-hour treatments for the hair and scalp.
  • Haircutting, Styling, and Techniques – 70 hours.
  • Shaving – 25 hours.
  • Hair coloring takes 25 hours.
  • 20 hours for waxing and facial hair design.

When you complete a barber training program, your school will send a notification of your graduation to PSI Services, the testing company that the Georgia Board authorizes to administer and grade the barber licensing exams.

You will be able to register for and schedule your licensing exams with PSI once your school has given its prior approval.

The Georgia Barber Practical Exam and the National Barber Written Exam are the two licensing exams that you must schedule. Follow these steps to set up an appointment for these exams:
