Steps To Becoming A Licensed Barber In Maryland

Barbers, hairdressers, and cosmetologists must hold licenses in every state. Candidates typically need to complete a state-approved cosmetology or barber program and pass an exam in order to be eligible for a license. 

Below are the license requirements for barbers in Maryland according to the Maryland Department of Labor

  1. Barber: Must pass an examination administered by the Board and provide documentation of completion of 1200 hours of student training in a barber school or 2250 hours as a registered apprentice in a licensed barbershop.
  1. Barber-Stylist Limited: Must pass an examination administered by the Board and provide documentation of having completed 1,650 hours as an apprentice barber-stylist limited in a licensed barbershop or 900 hours as an apprentice barber student in a barber school.
  1. Master Barber: Requires both a passing grade on both the master barber exam and the barber exam as well as 15 months of professional experience as a licensed barber.
