Apprenticeship

If you are unable to complete the conventional barber training program option, you may still be able to obtain a license in Michigan as a student barber.

You must have completed the 10th grade (or its equivalent) and be of good moral character to be eligible for this student license.

After receiving your license, you will be able to provide barber services while being closely supervised by a licensed instructor.

You may only extend this license for one more year at a time, for a total of two years.

2. Submit Your Application for Barber Licensure by Examination

Applying for the license by examination is the second step in obtaining a barber license in Michigan. The licensing tests cannot be taken until you have approval.

By submitting the license by examination application, you will be granted approval. In order to submit an application through Michigan’s online system, you must first register with the state’s licensing program by following these instructions:

  • Complete the MyLicense initial application for a barber license by examination.

Reciprocity

You may use reciprocity to apply for a barber license in Michigan if you already hold one in another state.

As a result, you will be able to obtain a Michigan license without taking the state’s licensing exams because of your prior license and work experience.

You must carry out the following actions in order to get a license through reciprocity:

  • Include a copy of your license there.
  • Add a $50 application fee (for applications submitted on an even-numbered year) or an $80.00 application fee (for odd-numbered years)

3. Pass the Michigan Barber Licensing Examinations

Taking and passing the Michigan licensing exams is the next step. You must register directly with PSI Services, the Michigan testing vendor before you can take the licensing exam.

Make sure to download and read the PSI Candidate Examination Bulletin to help you with this. You must pay the $161 exam fee and complete your registration online.

You will receive an examination registration form and be able to sit for the theory and practical portions of the two Michigan licensing exams once your registration with PSI is complete and the Michigan Board has approved your testing application.

4. Begin your Career as a Licensed Barber in Michigan

In general, barbers with more extensive education and training will succeed in the field. For instance, many job postings will request a barber who is skilled at performing a straight neck shave. This and other barbering services that you have already mastered will put you ahead of the competition.

You can now look for work as a licensed barber in Michigan by looking for traditional employment, a contracted position, a chair rental opportunity, or you can even open your own barbershop in accordance with Michigan laws.

You will require an inspection, additional barbershop license fees, and the submission of a barbershop license application if you intend to open your own barbershop.

5. Renew Your Michigan Barber License Biannually

Every two years on September 30th, the barber and barbershop licenses in Michigan expire. 30–44 days before your license expires, the Michigan Board will mail a renewal notification to the address on file.

After you submit the online renewal form and your $60.00 renewal fee following receipt of this notice, your new license will be sent to you. In order to avoid late fees and/or the relicensing process, you should renew as soon as possible.

Job Outlook for Barbers

Barbers, hairdressers, and cosmetologists’ total employment is expected to increase by 11% between 2021 and 2031, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

Over the next ten years, there are expected to be, on average, 93,800 new jobs for barbers, hairdressers, and cosmetologists. Many of those openings are anticipated to be brought on by the need to replace workers who change careers or leave the workforce due to retirement.

The demand for basic hair care services will increase due to population growth, which will increase the need for barbers and hairdressers.

Additionally, it is anticipated that over the projected decade, demand for advanced hair treatments such as hair straightening, hair coloring, and other advanced hair treatments will increase.

Those who offer specialized services, like nail and skin care, continue to compete with hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists. Instead of going to hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists for these services, customers frequently choose manicurists, pedicurists, and skincare specialists. Even so, more people will be needed to fill jobs as demand for personal appearance services rises.
